Broadway Market Cycle Chic

November 15th, 2008 | written by : finn

Late breakfast at Broadway Market today : Vietnamese coffee and a falafel wrap. It's a fashion parade down there and a Mecca for cycle chic spotting. Am still criplingly awkward putting my camera in people's faces but got a few shots I'm happy with. Above's a shot into Lock 7 a cycle cafe where you can have a drink, some cake and get your cycle repaired or just browse the accessories and hip second hand bikes on display. Its got a view down onto Regent's Canal or out at the passing cyclists laden with organic veg et al. The shop opened in April 2008 and was apparently inspired by a trip to Copenhagen - no surprise there.

Plenty of shabby chic ladies bikes being walked around here as well as a few new Bianchi cruisers, Pashleys, Bronxes, Electras, Raleighs and custom fixies. Wicker baskets are de rigeur for carrying groceries and the more designer boutique bags you can hang off your handlebars the better.

Emo punk chic is big around here and here's some early proof that Hackney does heels on bikes (plenty more seen btw but not quick enough on the trigger I'm afraid).

The fate of cars left too long around here . . . the end is nigh my gas guzzling friends.

Men’s Health UK discovers Fixed Wheel bikes

October 28th, 2008 | written by : finn

The October issue of Men's Health UK has an article on Fixies with some great shots of genuine New York riders by Colin Lane (The Strokes album cover photographer). "Single-speed and fixed-wheel bikes are the steeds of the moment" it says, easy to cringe perhaps but it's welcome to see a major magazine doing a credible feature with a positive message on city cycling. Shame they had to go to New York with London's thriving fixie scene on their doorstep however. People love reading about other places of course.

Ghost Bikes

October 5th, 2008 | written by : finn

There's a powerful article in The Guardian's Art section today on Ghost Cycles, part of a viral campaign of memorialising the spot where a cyclist has been killed. They started as potent traffic calming symbols in Missouri, San Francisco and NYC where many have become poignant shrines that are locally protected, supplied with fresh flowers and regularly repainted. The skeletal white bikes are now appearing in cities worldwide from Vienna to São Paulo, Whangerei to Toronto and on the streets of London and throughout the UK.

The article discusses in depth their history, significance and critics as well as describing individual campaigns in the US and UK. One of which I pass on my morning commute : James Foster's Ghost Bike sits outside Mosquito Bikes, Essex Road on the Hackney/Islington borders. It has sadly been vandalised. I'm sure I'm not alone in hoping the vandals concerned didn't understand the bike's significance. Please read the full article here.

London Bicycle Film Festival 2008

September 30th, 2008 | written by : finn

The Bicycle Film Festival party is coming to London's Barbican Centre this week. The BFF is an itinerant carnival of films, music, seminars and events bringing together diverse aspects of cycling life and culture from around the globe. The festival roadshow, now in its eighth year, has spread to 15 cities, from New York to Tokyo and Sydney to Zurich.

BFF was founded by Californian actor Brendt Barbur, with compensation money after being knocked off his bike into the path of a bus by a van door. "The bus driver came over and stared at me and didn't say a word. The man in the van didn't say a word. I felt a lack of respect and wanted to do something to advocate bike use, but I didn't know how to do it," he says. Instead of pocketing the compensation and taking to the subway, he decided to put his pay-off to work. "I'm into art, I'm into film, so that's what I did." There's a great interview with the man here.

One of the highlights looks like Saturday's Urban Bike Shorts evening kicking off "King of Stich" from Director Dan Leeb about daredevil bike messenger Felipe Robayo aka "The King of New York". See the photo above of him hitching a ride on a Lotus across the Williamsburg Bridge. For venue details and bookings see The Barbican site.
