London Bicycle Film Festival 2008
September 30th, 2008 | written by : finn
The Bicycle Film Festival party is coming to London's Barbican Centre this week. The BFF is an itinerant carnival of films, music, seminars and events bringing together diverse aspects of cycling life and culture from around the globe. The festival roadshow, now in its eighth year, has spread to 15 cities, from New York to Tokyo and Sydney to Zurich.
BFF was founded by Californian actor Brendt Barbur, with compensation money after being knocked off his bike into the path of a bus by a van door. "The bus driver came over and stared at me and didn't say a word. The man in the van didn't say a word. I felt a lack of respect and wanted to do something to advocate bike use, but I didn't know how to do it," he says. Instead of pocketing the compensation and taking to the subway, he decided to put his pay-off to work. "I'm into art, I'm into film, so that's what I did." There's a great interview with the man here.
One of the highlights looks like Saturday's Urban Bike Shorts evening kicking off "King of Stich" from Director Dan Leeb about daredevil bike messenger Felipe Robayo aka "The King of New York". See the photo above of him hitching a ride on a Lotus across the Williamsburg Bridge. For venue details and bookings see The Barbican site.

September 25th, 2008 | written by : finn
Thought it was time to draw attention to this inspiring bike recycling movie. Matthew McGuinness is a cofounder of The 62, a Brooklyn-based art collective who started Recycle-a-Bicycle, a youth training initiative in NYC. He's in this slightly contrived but ever so hip bit of cinematography. Click the image above for the movie. If you fancy recycling your own bike get the gear here and check out this book :

Hasids vs Hotties in Brooklyn bike war
September 13th, 2008 | written by : finn
Leaders of South Williamsburg's Hasidic Jewish community said yesterday that bike lanes that bring scantily clad cyclists - especially sexy women - peddling through their neighborhood are definitely not kosher.
"I have to admit, it's a major issue, women passing through here in that dress code," Simon Weisser, a member of Community Board 1 in Williamsburg-Greenpoint, told The New York Post. Hasids are forbidden from looking at members of the opposite sex who aren't fully dressed, said local activist Isaac Abraham.
The existing one-way lanes are popular with North Williamsburg hipsters - many of whom ride in shorts or skirts. New lanes that were planned through the area are temporarily on hold. For more on the culture clash over sexy cyclists read in full at the New York Post.

Band Tour Mexico on bicycles : 5000m with a drum kit
September 8th, 2008 | written by : finn
Californian band Ginger Ninjas have been on the tour, lugging their gear and powering their sound system by bicycle. "From the Sierra Nevada through the suburban wastelands and urban decay of southern California, over the world’s busiest border crossing, across the wilderness and austere beauty of Baja, into the heart of megapolitan Mexico City, and down to the land of mystic pyramids, the team played shows, recorded music with local musicians, and advocated for a leapfrog-style transition to sustainable transportation.
The team came with the message that bikes are an essential and beautiful part of a sustainable transportation system and that Mexico still has the opportunity to skip US-style development and its suburbanized cult of the car."
